Q. What can happen if an application fails? A. When a device, connection or application fails, it can take down mission critical operations. Sometimes, one systems failure will cascade to applications on other systems that rely on the data or services from the failed unit. Per-rack power requirements constrain the number of racks a data center can support. A typical 10,000 - 20,000 sq. ft. facility designed for 50 - 100 watts/sq. ft requires 1/2 megawatt to 2 megawatts of power. Availability and cost of utility power in the megawatt range is expensive and difficult to obtain. Supporting infrastructure - generators, ATS, UPS, and distribution equipment - also are costly. Careful planning and growth projections must be maintained to ensure power requirements can be met. Hardware assets should be used well after their depreciated financial life has ended — for as long as is technically possible. Recent changes to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure put IT on the front lines for ensuring a business is complying with regulations, notably Sarbanes-Oxley and HIPAA. Not only is it necessary to store key data for longer periods, but being able to retrieve information at a granular level –right down to specific emails –is now an IT responsibility, one that if not handled properly could result in a vacation with the local municipal system. The usual goal of virtualization is to centralize administrative tasks while improving scalability and work loads. Virtualization was first introduced in the 1960s by IBM to boost utilization of large, expensive mainframe systems by partitioning them into logical, separate virtual machines that could run multiple applications and processes at the same time. In the 1980s and 1990s, this centrally shared mainframe model gave way to a distributed, client-server computing model, in which many low-cost x86 servers and desktops independently run specific applications. A storage management solution should address the protection of recoverable as well as unrecoverable information. The need to protect unrecoverable data is obvious — unless this data is protected, it must be manually recreated if it is lost. As for recoverable data, although it may be recoverable through reinstallation, the process can be extremely time-consuming and costly. To reinstall an updated application, users must install the application plus all the updates. In addition, all preferences and options need to be reset to their exact state prior to the loss. With the Cisco UCS M71KR-E and M71KR-Q adapters, a maximum of two adapters are presented to the VMware ESX hypervisor running on the blade. Each of these adapters can be defined within the Cisco Unified Computing System as connected to an individual fabric interconnect and, optionally, enabling a failover to the other. This fabric failover enables a model in which the virtual machine data can use one path within the Cisco Unified Computing System by default, and all other connections can go on the other path. Even though Green IT has become a hot topic in 2010, its roots run back to early 90's. In 1992, the Energy Star program was launched by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This program encouraged new electronic devices to be more energy-efficient by lowering energy consumption, efficient design and reduced use of hazardous material. The Energy Star program was revised in 2006 and now includes much stricter efficiency requirements and a tiered ranking system for approval. Data storage systems are used in a variety of businesses for the purpose of storing and maintaining data which is critical to the operation of the businesses and their customers. It is very important that such data storage systems be highlyreliable to minimize or eliminate the chance of losing data if the system fails. The most secure and reliable systems employ total redundancy, in which every component of the system is replicated, such that, upon a failure of a component, anothercomponent takes over operation, so that the data storage system can remain fully functional. For example, two storage processors may be provided in a system such that if one fails, the other assumes the operation of the failed processor as well asmaintaining its own. However, total redundancy is expensive and can be an inefficient use of system resources. Next-generation data centers have specific server networking needs, and the Cisco Nexus 5010 one-rack unit (RU) switch provides an Ethernet-based unified fabric that's designed to meet those needs. |
